Rodney Van Holmes was born on August 24, 1966, to the late William Holmes. Sr. and Lois Vann Holmes. He was the youngest of three children. Rodney was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Gabriele (Holmes) Riley. His memory will forever be cherished by his brother, William Holmes, Jr. (Billy); his aunts, Juanita Chambers of Decatur, Georgia, and Jettie Vann of Hazlehurst, Georgia; and a host of cousins, friends, fellow musicians, and fans.

Rodney has been regarded by many as one of the best drummers in the world. His early interest was shaped by an upbringing rich with music. Rodney’s talent became evident at an early age. He began playing the drums in the fourth grade junior band. The following year his mother purchased his first drum set on which he was entirely self-taught. By the time he graduated high school, he decided that he wanted to become a professional musician. After graduating from Woodlands High School in Westchester Count, New York, in 1984, Rodney earned a music scholarship to Long Island University. Rather than accept the scholarship, he chose to forge his own path. That decision led Rodney into New York’s music scene, where he quickly established himself as an exceptional drummer. His talent attracted the attention of keyboardist, composer, and musical trailblazer Dr. Clyde Criner, who became an early mentor. Together, they recorded Behind the Sun and The Color of Dark on the RCA/Novus label.

Throughout his career, Rodney formed his own bands: Terminators, Lithium Tree, and The Rodney Holmes Trio. He also performed and recorded with many of the most respected names in jazz, rock, and contemporary music, including Wayne Shorter, Joe Sawinul, Al Jarreau, Michael Brecker, Maceo Parker, Special EFX, the Brecker Brothers, and Carlos Santana. His extraordinary musicianship, creativity, and unmistakable style earned him widespread respect throughout the music industry.
