John Houston Obituary
Mr. John L. Houston was born on September 20, 1930, to the late Walter R. Houston and Evelina McKnight in Jesup, Georgia. He attended Wayne County Training School. At an early age, John joined the United States Marine Corp. and later served in the United States Army. He is a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
A native and life-long resident of Wayne County, John was married to the late Juanita Fields Houston for 30 years. He was a faithful member of Mt. Mariah A.M.E. Church where he served on the Trustee Board and currently served on the Steward Board as church treasurer. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #228 in Sterling, GA, the American Legion Post #529, and The Voices of Wayne Male Chorus. He was an employee of Rayonier for 24 years before retiring.
He was preceded in death by both parents, his wife, and his siblings -- Earnest Houston, Herbert L. Houston, W.T. "Baby" Houston, Dr. Telfair W. "Dub" Houston, Burnice Houston, and Thelma Williams. John passed from this life Saturday, June 11, 2016, at Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin, GA.
He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Michael Houston of Jesup, GA; two sisters-in-law; Elizabeth Isles, and Jannie Cohen; two brothers-in-law: Willie Fields and Richard Fields; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mr. Houston's final burial place is Glennville Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
