Baxley Funeral Home announces the death, visitation, and funeral service of Mr. Bobby Dell Sumner, Sr. of Baxley, Georgia. Mr. Sumner departed this life on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Jeff Davis Hospital in Hazlehurst, Georgia.
Visitation for Mr. Sumner will be held Friday, July 8th from 5:00pm until 7:00 pm at First Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church located 70 Pleasant Hill Church Road in Baxley, Georgia. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 9th at 3:00 pm also at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The repast will be in the church Social Hall.
On July 5, 2016, Bobby Dell Sumner fulfilled one of his favorite songs - “One glad morning when this life is over, I’ll fly away!” As we were expecting him to walk again amongst us, he instead, found a far better way and took the wings of the Morning Dove and flew away to his heavenly eternal home. Bobby Dell Sumner was born on February 9, 1943 to the late Deacon Barney and Emma Tomberlin Sumner in Baxley, Georgia. He joined the First Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, where he served faithfully as the Adult Sunday School Teacher, Adult Bible Study Teacher, Choir Ministry, Culinary Ministry, Chairperson of the Building Committee and assistant architectural designer for the new church. He served diligently and faithfully in many capacities until his health began to diminish. Upon graduation from Appling County Consolidated High School, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served a two year term as a paratrooper and heavy equipment diesel mechanic, operator and transporter. He was also an employee at Plant Hatch/ Georgia Power for thirty-three years, where he worked as a senior warehouse supervisor until his retirement. He was married to the late Frankie M. Coley who preceded him in death. To this union were born three lovely sons: Bobby Dale Summer (who preceded him in death), Zachary Lytrell Sumner and a devoted son, Delbert Rodriquez “Rodney” Sumner. He was also preceded in death by siblings Minnie, Artie, Addie, Ruth, Eldredge, Linwood, and Dorice. On July 2, 1994, he met His Georgia Peach, his brother, Deacon Artie, affectionately called her Bird Liver. They dated for six years. Then on June 3, 2000 he married the love of his life, Agnes Hosley of Americus, Georgia.
He leaves to cherish his memories: A loving and devoted wife of sixteen years: Agnes H. Sumner. One daughter: Edwina (Nabil) Simaan, Nashville, TN. Two sons: Zachary (Kim) Sumner, Waycross, GA and Delbert “Rodney” Sumner, Baxley, GA. A Devoted mother -in-law: Bobbie Lee Hosley, Payne Bottom Community, Macon County. One sister: Warnell Riley (Harry). Brothers-in-law: John Otis Ogden, Baxley, GA and Jesse Lee Hosley (Doris), Payne Bottom Community. Sisters-in-Law: Miriam Sumner, Decatur, GA; Bobbie Hogan (Albert), Brunswick, GA; Nadine Sumner, Baxley, GA, Mary Bryant, Payne Bottom Community, Melenda Henry (Eddie), Oglethorope, GA, and Alma Hosley (Johnny), Montezuma, GA. Nine grandchildren: Frankie, Jasmine, Desmond, Constance, Claude, Celsi, Deyaunna, RJ, Eden Grace, Delanna and four great-grandchildren. God-sister/brother: Mary Sue Carter and David Carter. Devoted Godsons: Russell Carter, Stacey Carter, Vinson Mann, Andra Goethe. He also leaves a host of loving nieces nephews, cousins, and sorrowing friends.
